Construction of our new £3m 'Build Centre' is underway at our Newton Abbot site. This fantastic new retail area will comprise 22,475 square feet of indoor retail, plus an outside retail/display area of 13,000 square feet. It will not only expand on our already extensive DIY range but will also focus on trade customers and requisites. It will have its own entrance and car park, together with extended opening hours to benefit those in the building trade.

Kier, the leading property, residential, construction and services group, are building the new project, which aims to open in Spring 2017 - and the new design incorporates some of our famous architecture, including three 'Trago Towers'.  The image below shows a 3D drawing of the new development.

Two Towers and counting...March 2017

We started construction of our fourth store in October 2016, which will be located in Merthyr Tydfil. This is a £40m development and will be our first ever Welsh location and the first site outside Cornwall and Devon.

Our new store is due to open in Spring 2018 and will have over 200,000 square feet of retail therapy, with warehousing, internal roads and car parking. We're also planning a play area and restaurants.Later phases, following the opening, will include a petrol forecourt, together with the further development of our leisure facilities. We've appointed Kier to construct the new store and a high percentage of steel used in the steel frame is coming locally, from Port Talbot. There will be 17 'Trago Towers' incorporated into the finished store. Other interesting facts include:
  • The building will have a 1 mile perimeter
  • If all the Euro-clad panels being used in construction were laid vertically, end-to-end, it would be higher than Mount Everest
  • There will be 23,868 ft (7,275m) of drainage - equal to 1.4 laps of the Silverstone Grand Prix Track
An important development for the town and local area, the store will provide job opportunities during construction and will create around 400 jobs in the retail, leisure and warehousing sector.

The images below show the official 'Turf Cutting'  which took place on 7th October, followed by an image showing construction as of January 2017.

UPDATE: This AERIAL FOOTAGE was taken at the end of March, which shows the inside areas developing, together with construction of the entrance and atrium. hanks go to Aerial Optics for the footage.

Trago Merthyr Tydfil -  Construction as at end February 2017

Many of our customers remember when Trago began - over 50 years ago! Since then we've had generations of families shopping with us plus lots of new customers along the way.  We've gone from selling goods out of huts and army mess tents to three stores with thousands of square feet of retail space and over 180,000 products!

Click HERE for an article about our Chairman, Bruce Robertson, where he explains how it all began!

Additionally, the site of the first (and original) Trago store at Liskeard also has a fascinating history, involving mining, trees and gunpowder!  You can find out more HERE.
